The question that changed my life... Who am I?

Have you ever completely lost who you are, or felt like there is something missing within you? It’s a profound thought that many of us grapple with at various stages of our lives, often during times of transition or significant change.

About two years ago, after having my third child, that’s exactly how I felt. The whirlwind of motherhood, coupled with the demands of daily life, left me feeling somewhat adrift. It was as if the roles I played overshadowed the essence of who I truly was. I found myself questioning my identity beyond the titles of ‘mum’, ‘wife’, and ‘daughter’. In the midst of nurturing my family, I felt a growing sense of disconnection from my own self.

The Moment the Question Took Hold

It was a beautiful sunny day, one of those days that is filled with possibilities. I had a warm cup of tea in my hands, its earthy aroma wafting gently through the air, and was gazing out at the birds on the feeder in my garden, watching them flit about with an effortless grace. From the outside, it looked like a perfect moment, a snapshot of serenity that many would envy. Yet, despite the picturesque scene unfolding before me, a storm brewed within.

Inside, all I could think was… who am I? This simple yet profound question echoed in my mind, drowning out the chirping of the birds and the warmth of the sun on my skin. The roles I embraced—yes, I am a mum, a wife, a daughter, a woman—felt like mere labels, insufficient to encapsulate the depth of my being. I enjoy gardening, nurturing my plants, engaging in various crafts, writing and finding solace in nature’s embrace. Yet, none of these passions seemed to fully answer the question that lingered like a shadow over my heart.

Feeling Lost in the Roles We Play

Do these things define who I am? I didn’t think so. There was an unsettling realisation that I felt like a collection of roles and responsibilities rather than a whole person. I felt like there was more to me, a deeper essence waiting to be uncovered. More I was meant to be, or become. I craved a sense of fulfillment that transcended the daily routines and responsibilities that consumed my life.

Don’t get me wrong, I was (and still am) deeply grateful for my life. The laughter of my children, the love of my partner, and the comfort of my home were treasures I cherished. But there was a quiet feeling that something was missing, an elusive thread that seemed to weave through the fabric of my existence. That feeling led me down a path I never expected, a journey through spirituality, mindfulness, and holistic wellness that began as a whisper in my soul.

The realisation

Along the way, I began to realise something important: if I could find more balance within myself, I could not only feel more like the woman I wanted to be, but also become a better role model for my children. I recognised that my journey was not just for my own benefit; it was also about creating a nurturing environment for my family. I started to feel a pull towards helping others who might be feeling the same way, those who might be struggling with their own identities amidst the chaos of life.

If spirituality isn’t your cup of tea, that’s completely okay. This space isn’t about fitting into one box or adhering to a single philosophy. It’s about exploring what works for you, discovering the practices and beliefs that resonate with your own journey. Everyone’s path is unique, and I believe that embracing our individuality is key to finding our true selves.

In future posts I'll be sharing thoughts, tools, and small shifts that have helped me feel more aligned, more grounded, and more connected to who I am. These insights are not prescriptive but rather invitations to explore and reflect on your own life. From mindfulness techniques to simple daily practices, I hope to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery.

Moving Forward with Clarity

I truly believe we all have the ability to grow, to change, and to create a life that feels more like our own. It’s about peeling back the layers, confronting the fears and doubts that hold us back, and stepping into the fullness of who we are meant to be. To become the people we wish one day to be, not just in our dreams but in our everyday reality.

If you feel lost, start small. Notice what brings you peace and joy. Give yourself permission to explore and grow. Your identity is more than labels—it’s your story, your values, and your unique light. Together, let’s embark on this journey of exploration and transformation.
